Where Do The Aromatherapy Oils Originate From?

The Essential Oil The essential oils are obtained from the different parts of the plants, shrubs and trees. The amount of oil obtained is in a very small amount. It takes 900 kilograms of rose petals to produce ½ kilogram of rose oil.

Obtaining an essential oil at home.
A small amount of essential oil can be obtained at home by squeezing the peel of any citrus fruit, such as a lemon or orange. This method of extracting oil is called hand expression. Collect the extracted oil into a sponge. Squeeze the sponge into a container when saturated.

Other Methods Of Obtaining Essential Oils
The most popular method of extracting essential oils is distillation. The oil-bearing parts of the chosen plant, such as the flowers and leaves, are packed into a distillation vessel, which is then closed and boiled with water. The boiling water causes the oil cells to burst. The oil and water separate and the essential oil can then be drawn off. There are different methods of distillation including steam and dry distillation.

The water separated from the oil carries the fragrance of the oil and is sold as a separate product. Rose water and orange flower water are available in the market and are excellent skin fresheners.

The cost of the oil depends on the availability of its source. For example lavender oil is not very expensive as lavender is easy to grow and has a high yield of flowers. On the other hand, roses have a very low oil yield, making rose oil one of the most expensive to produce.

The quality of the oil is also influenced by the climatic and soil conditions in which the plant has grown. French and English Lavender therefore produce slightly different oils.
