Violet Leaves Violet Leaves (Viola odorata)

Origins
This plant was considered sacred in ancient times. Hippocrates recommended it particularly against headaches and eye problems. It grows throughout Europe and Asia, and is cultivated most widely in the south of France, in northern Italy and, more recently, in China.

Essential oil
The essential oil is obtained by extraction of freshly harvested leaves. The oil is a dark green, viscous liquid with a delicate, sweetly floral perfume. It is one of the most expensive essential oils.

Most common uses
  • Has good antiseptic qualities

  • An efficient expectorant of the respiratory tract

  • Good diuretic

  • Helpful in cases of fluid retention

  • Good for slimming

  • Good for certain skin conditions such as Acne rosacea
Ylang Ylang Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)

Origins

A native of Indonesia, is now cultivated in the Comoro Islands, north west of Madagascar. The trees in this area are pruned to encourage the branches to spread horizontally in order to facilitate gathering the lovely yellow flowers.

Essential oil

Distillation by water, or water and steam, of freshly picked flowers produces a pale yellow oil, with a warm fragrance that creates a wonderfully exotic atmosphere.
