Glossary of Essential Aromatherapy Oils

Thyme Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

Origin
Thyme has been one of the most widely used aromatic herbs in medicine evr since ancient times. It grows abundantly in Italy, France, Spain, Morocco, Turkey, Israel, the USSR, China and central Europe.

Essential oil
Red thyme is obtained by the water and steam distillation of partially dried herbs and is, as its name suggests, reddish brown in colour. It has a powerful spicy smell. White thyme oil is most often the result of adulteration with other essential oils.

Most common uses
  • Strong general stimulant

  • Has an antiseptic effect on the respiratory tract and is useful in the treatment of colds, influenza, coughs and whooping cough.

  • Stimulates the digestive process.

  • Has a diuretic effect and is useful in the treatment of problems of the urinary tract.

  • Helps in cases of fatigue, anxiety, depression and insomnia

  • Helps treat aches and pains

  • Good for rheumatism

  • Regulates low blood pressure

  • Regulates scanty or absent periods

  • Good for circulation

  • Combats fluid retention

  • Good for dental problems

  • Discourages hair loss

  • Helps skin conditions, such as warts, dermatitis, wounds and burns.
Vertivert Vertivert (Vetiveria zizanoides)

Origins
Vertivert is a wild grass that originated in India. The wild plant does not yield much essential oil, and it is now cultivated in India, West Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Jamaica, Zaire, Haiti and Reunion; these last two are the biggest producers. Its many rootless mean that is used as a soil protector in volcanic areas.

Essential oil
The cleaned, dried rootlets are cut into small pieces and soaked in water before being distilled by steam to produce a viscous liquid of rich amber to dark olive colour. It has sweet smell reminiscent of roots and wet soil.

Most common uses
  • The essential oil of tranquility,, it has a generally calming effect.
