Black Pepper Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)

Origins
One of the most expensive spices in the world, black pepper has been cultivated for the last 2000 years in southern and south-east India and the Indonesian islands. In the present day, it is grown in Indonesia, Malaysia and also in Madagascar. Only a small amount of the pepper produced is used to yield essential oil - the main distillation centres being in Europe and the US.

Essential oil
Steam distillation of the dried, crushed, not quite ripe fruit of the pepper vine produces pale yellow oil that becomes darker and thicker as it gets older. It has a pungent, spicy aroma.

Most common uses
  • Helps fight fever.

  • Strengthens muscles, which is useful in cases of prolapse.

  • Efficient expectorant, which is chiefly helpful in elderly people.

  • Useful antiseptic for the urinary tract and gynecological areas.

  • Good for aches and pains.

  • Good for fatigue and poor muscle tone.

  • Stimulates the digestive tract.
Cajuput Cajuput (Melaleuca leucodendrom)

Origins
The name comes from Malaysian caju-put, also found in Australia. Sometimes called the swamp tea tree or ti-tree, it has white flowers hanging on a long spike. The leaves are highly aromatic.

Essential oil
Steam distillation of the fresh leaves and buds produces colorless or pale greenish yellow oil with a strong, clear smell. It creates a sensation of inner purity. As a fragrance, it is a great purifier of the atmosphere.

Most common uses
  • Powerful antiseptic.

  • Has uplifting effect on mood.

  • Acts on the respiratory tract to help in cases of colds, influenza, sinus trouble, bronchitis, laryngitis, asthma and tuberculosis.

  • Good for digestive difficulties and vomiting.
