![]() Origins One of the most expensive spices in the world, black pepper has been cultivated for the last 2000 years in southern and south-east India and the Indonesian islands. In the present day, it is grown in Indonesia, Malaysia and also in Madagascar. Only a small amount of the pepper produced is used to yield essential oil - the main distillation centres being in Europe and the US. ![]() Origins The name comes from Malaysian caju-put, also found in Australia. Sometimes called the swamp tea tree or ti-tree, it has white flowers hanging on a long spike. The leaves are highly aromatic. Essential oil Steam distillation of the fresh leaves and buds produces colorless or pale greenish yellow oil with a strong, clear smell.
