Aromatherapy and Skin Care

BeautyBeauty
Beauty is the reflection of one's personality. It is the art of making the most of oneself. One's skin and hair reflect the way one is- either glowing and vital reflecting that the person is physically fit and fairly at peace with the world, or dull or gray, a sign of illness suffering, stress and worry.

A healthy, balanced diet, exercise, exercise and sufficient sleep also play an important role in enhancing the beauty of an individual. To look beautiful, one has to feel beautiful from within.

Aromatherapy can help in reducing the problems related to stress, worry and fatigue to a large extent. It can also help in taking care of the skin and in a positive way can improve the beauty routine.

Mixing aromatherapy oils into face creams and lotions can prove very beneficial and can do wonders for the skin.

Find Out Your Skin Type

Oily Skin
  • Feels supple and elastic, even after washing
  • Looks shiny
  • Often blackheads and/or spots are present
  • Can look sluggish, sallow
  • · Hair is often oily, too

Oily skin, if properly looked after, can be an advantage. It stays elastic and firm for longer and is less prone to wrinkles and fine lines than other skin types. However, it needs special attention to keep it free from spots and blackheads, and can sometimes look rather dull and yellow.

    Dry skin
  • Feels tight after washing
  • Is dry, scaly or flaky to touch
  • Can look gray or pinkish
  • Reacts adversely to harsh products

  • Dry skin is clear of spots and fairly problem free in younger years. It ages more quickly as it is not naturally lubricated. Hence, extra care must be taken to keep the skin lubricated. Regular use of moisturizers can be beneficial.

    Hyper sensitive skin
  • Usually fair, freckly or prone to high colour
  • Burns easily in sunlight
  • Flushes quickly
  • Reacts to harsh substances quickly, becoming itchy, red and irritated

  • This skin type is often found in blondes and redheads. Extra care must be taken when choosing skin care products so they protect and soothe, rather than irritate this skin type.

    Combination skin
  • Spots/blemishes on nose, chin or forehead
  • Blackheads on nose, chin or forehead
  • Dry patches, particularly cheeks
  • Cheeks feel tight after washing
  • Shiny and flaky patches

  • Combination skin is the most common of all skin types. It is important to treat the dry and oily areas differently, as a product for oily skin could be damaging for the dry skin and vice versa.

    Normal Skin
  • Clear and free of spots and blemishes

  • Soft and supple

  • Even texture and colour

  • This skin type is very rare. Mostly babies, children and few fortunate adults are blessed with such a skin. Looking after such a skin type is as important as taking care of the other skin types.

The following test will be helpful in determination of the skin type
    1. On waking up in the morning (presuming that you cleaned your face the night before and did not use a greasy night cream), take a paper tissue and separate its layers so that you have only one ply.
    2. Press this on your face, touching all the contours.
    3. Hold it up to the light.

    Results
  • If there are no oil marks: Then you have a dry skin, may be sensitive too.
  • If there are oil marks in the centre of the tissue: Then you have a combination skin.
  • If the tissue is mainly oily: Then you have an oily skin.

    Cleanse, Balance and Moisturize
It is very important to follow an effective routine to keep your skin looking healthy and pink.

    Cleansing
An effective cleansing routine balances the skin, helping it to function properly. All skin types need to be cleansed twice a day. It is very important to cleanse the skin in the morning. The skin throws out toxic waste products at night while you sleep. That is why it is advisable not to put a moisturizer straight on to the skin as it prevents this shedding process from being effective.

    Oily skin cleansing
    Morning
Either use a cleansing milk or a balanced cleansing bar, if you prefer to wash your face.

    Evening
First, use a cleansing milk to remove all traces of make-up. Then, wash your face with a balanced cleansing bar.

Note: Just washing the face is not an effective way of removing make-up.

    Combination skin cleansing
    Morning
Either use a cleansing milk or a balanced cleansing bar, if you prefer to wash your face, but pay particular attention to nose, chin and forehead areas.

    Evening
Use a cleansing milk to remove all traces of make-up. Then, wash your face with a balanced cleansing bar. But be gentle on your cheeks and if they are dry repeat the cleansing process with a milk cleanser rather than by washing your face.

    Dry Skin Cleansing
    Morning
Use a cleansing cream. Thoroughly massage it into the face with fingers and then remove.

    Evening
Use cleansing milk to remove make-up. Cleanse again using cleansing cream.

    Hyper-sensitive skin cleansing
    Morning
Use a cleansing milk or cream specially made for very sensitive skin. Avoid skin washes.

    Evening
Remove make-up with a cleansing milk. Repeat the cleansing using a cream. Be gentle when removing cleanser.

    Normal Skin Cleansing
    Morning
Use either a cleansing milk or a balanced cleansing bar.

    Evening
Remove make-up with cleansing milk, then repeat with milk or cleansing bar.

    Note:
Always remove cleansing cream or milk with dampened cotton wool. This glides easily over the skin without dragging and is much kinder than tissues. If using a flannel to remove traces of the cleansing bar, make sure it is scrupulously clean. Flannels and sponges are perfect hosts for harmful bacteria.

    Aromatherapy ProductsAromatherapy Cleansers

  • Dry skin: Camomile, geranium, rose, ylang ylang

  • Chapped cracked skin: Benzoin, camomile

  • Hyper-sensitive skin: Camomile, neroli, jasmine, rose

  • Balancing
Skin tonics, or fresheners, have two effects on the skin after cleansing.

    1. They remove the last trace of cleansing milk or cream.
    2. They help to restore the skin's natural protective mantle.

However those with oily skin should not use skin tonic containing alcohol (often called an astringent) as it strips away the skin's natural protective barrier, and with prolonged use can sensitize the skin or cause irritation. The ratio is two drops of aromatherapy oil to 4 fl oz (100 ml) of toner, either used singly or in combination.

Oily skin: Add lemon, lavender, bergamot, juniper or ylang ylang to witch hazel.

Acne: Add lemon grass, lavender, juniper or camomile to distilled or mineral water.

Dry skin: Add rose, ylang ylang, geranium, or camomile to rosewater.

Hyper-sensitive skin: Add camomile, neroli, jasmine, or rose to orange flower water.

Normal skin: Add lavender, rose or neroli, to rosewater or orange flower water.

Note: Fresheners, toners or cleansers should be applied with damp cotton wool. The face and neck should be gently wiped with the damped cotton wool giving special attention to the creases around the chin. This process should be repeated if necessary.

    Moisturizing
A moisturizer protects the skin from moisture loss, helping to keep it soft, smooth and supple. It also protects the skin from the penetration of grime, chemicals and bacteria. Each skin type needs to be moisturized, but care should be taken while choosing the correct moisturizer that would suit the particular skin type.

The moisturizer should be applied to the skin while it is still slightly damp from balancing. This enhances the moisturizing effect. The moisturizer should be gently spread first on the neck, then to the face. The skin should not be dragged particularly around the delicate eye area.

A moisturizer with a vegetable oil base should be used on the skin. Mineral oil is not compatible with the skin, therefore The baby lotions and petroleum jelly products should be avoided.

Try any of the following combinations that will turn a normal day or night cream into beneficial aromatherapy treatment.
